A Butterfly Inspiration

A Butterfly Inspiration

“There was a moth that flew into the house a moment ago, and landed on the wall in front of me, right in the face of the light. At first, for some reason, I allowed the moth to bother me, as if it would harm me in some way. And as I sat there I remembered what it felt like when I was a little girl, when I would hold a butterfly in my hands, and then let it go. I remember how it almost tickled and I really wanted to feel that again.

As I leaned over, I grabbed the moth in my hand, and there was that old familiar feeling - as I just smiled. My grip was ever so gentle, yet strong enough that it would not hurt itself, or get out. When I opened the door, I put just my hand out (so it would know it was safe and that I wasn’t going to come get it), and let go. As I walked back to the desk, God, made me laugh:

We get into situations that we just don’t know how to get out of,
and then we always head for "The Light".
As we calm ourselves in the warmth of The Light, we say to God:
“Okay Father, please help me. Let go and let God. I trust and love You”.
And as a loving father would, God so gently reaches out and grabs us,
as we start to panic (being the control freaks that we are)
and flutter away in His gentle hand.
He smiles, as the feeling almost tickles Him,
knowing that if we would just trust in Him
and understand that when He gets us to the place where
it is safe enough for him to let go,
He will.

However, how we choose to use that time, when we’re in His hands, is up to us. We can either flutter around and wear ourselves out, or, trust Him and relax so when He does let go, we have the strength to fly as straight, as far, as fast, and yes - as high, as God wants us to."

Undeniably, there are a lot of interesting things about butterflies. Here are a few:

  • Butterflies don't start off as the beautiful creatures that we see. In fact, butterflies originate from caterpillars, which many don't find exactly pleasant to look at. Butterflies are holometabolous in that they undergo four stages of metamorphosis.
  • Despite being small creatures, some butterflies are known to travel great distances as driven by an instinct to migrate. The Monarch butterfly, for example, flies around 4,000 to 4,800 kilometers to migrate from the Rocky Mountains to Mexico.
  • It is believed that butterflies have colorful wings primarily as a defense mechanism. Though most butterflies secrete toxins that make them unpalatable, brightly-colored wings are interpreted by would-be predators as a signal to stay away.
  • Butterflies are very important to ecosystems because they are one of the main agents of pollination. Since their staple food is nectar, butterflies frequent flowers. While feeding, pollen sticks to these insects and is eventually transferred when the butterfly goes to another plant.
